1955 â Elvis Presley was voted Most Promising Country and Western Artist in a U.S. DJ poll, marking a critical moment before he fully burst onto the mainstream scene. 1965 â The Velvet Underground, the brainchild of Lou Reed and John Cale, made their live debut at Summit High School in New Jersey.
