💿 Prepare to be shocked: some of rock's biggest legends never actually hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100! Creedence Clearwater Revival came tantalizingly close with five consecutive #2 hits, Led Zeppelin never cracked the top spot despite "Stairway to Heaven," KISS only managed two top 10 hits, and Bruce Springsteen somehow never reached the summit. These artists prove that chart success doesn't always align with true musical greatness and lasting impact.

John Lennon privately informed Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr that he was leaving The Beatles. During a meeting at Apple Corps headquarters, Lennon dropped his bombshell: "I want a divorce." The announcement stunned his bandmates, with McCartney later calling it a "show-stopper." Though George Harrison wasn't present, this moment effectively ended the world's most famous band, even though the news wouldn't become public until McCartney's announcement in April 1970.

Paul and Linda McCartney were arrested for cannabis possession in Sweden. Following a Wings performance in Gothenburg, armed police appeared in the auditorium and arrested the couple along with drummer Denny Seiwell for possessing seven ounces of marijuana. They were fined around £1,000 and allowed to continue their tour. McCartney later joked that the arrest was "excellent advertisement" for the band, helping improve his reputation after the poorly received "Mary Had A Little Lamb" single.

David Bowie achieved his first US #1 hit with "Fame". Co-written with John Lennon and Carlos Alomar, the funky track topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the biggest hits of the year. Lennon's backing vocals can be heard throughout the song, and Bowie later admitted he had "absolutely no idea" the song would be so successful. It would be almost eight years before Bowie scored his second and final #1 hit with "Let's Dance."

AC/DC released "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" in Australia. The hard rock band's third studio album featured the iconic title track and "Jailbreak," though it wouldn't reach American shores until 1981. The title was inspired by cartoon character Dishonest John from "Beany and Cecil," whose business card read "Dirty deeds done dirt cheap. Special rates for Sundays and holidays." The album showcased Bon Scott's explicit lyrics and the Young brothers' thunderous guitar work.
