📅 This Week in Rock History

  • 1955: Carl Perkins recorded “Blue Suede Shoes” at Sun Studios. Revisit the iconic track performed with Carl Perkins, George Harrison, & Eric Clapton.

  • 1957 – Jerry Lee Lewis turned up the heat with Great Balls of Fire! This fiery track blazed a trail for rock ‘n’ roll, with Jerry Lee pounding the keys like no one else. Experience the fire live on Ed Sullivan here.

  • 1963 – The Beatles, already on the rise, recorded an interview for a program called, “Move Over, Dad,” at Westward Television Studios. With mobs of fans outside the ABC Cinema, where they were set to play, they had to use a secret tunnel to get to the interview taping. This rare footage captures their humor and charm in those early years. Check out the footage, it starts off with the Beatles clowning around in a silent film, then there’s an interview about halfway through.

  • 1965: The Rolling Stones make their US TV debut on Hullabaloo with “Get Off My Cloud.” See the Stones first US TV performance

  • 1970 – Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd’s original frontman, released his second solo album, Barrett. With David Gilmour on board as producer and Richard Wright on keys, the album is a bittersweet relic of Barrett’s incredible talent.   • 1976 – Led Zeppelin’s live album, “The Song Remains the Same,” took over the UK charts. Recorded at Madison Square Garden, this legendary album captures the essence of their 1973 NYC concerts, and the accompanying film became an iconic piece of rock cinema.   • 1987 – Sly Stone, known for his funky rhythms and wild performances, made his comeback concert in Los Angeles. True to his reputation, he arrived more than an hour late and ended up getting arrested over unpaid child support. It was a true “Sly” moment, unpredictable to the end.   • 1931: Ike Turner, one of rock’s pioneers, would have been 93 today. Hear his classic “Rocket 88” considered to be the first Rock & Roll song

  • 1944: Booker T. Jones – Turning 80 today, Booker T. Jones helped define the Memphis soul sound with his band Booker T. & the M.G.’s. Their hit "Green Onions" is a rock staple, and Booker T. is still as soulful as ever. Groove to "Green Onions" here.

  • 1945: Neil Young – Celebrating 79, Neil Young is a living legend, from his work with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to his solo career.   • 1947: Toy Caldwell: The guitar genius of The Marshall Tucker Band, Toy Caldwell brought southern rock to life with tracks like “Can’t You See.” His powerful playing and soulful lyrics are unforgettable. Watch him here.

  • Mitch Mitchell (2008) – Drummer for The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Mitch passed away at 62, just after finishing the Experience Hendrix Tour.
